State Plane Coordinate System of 2022 Zones
Last update ยท September 2026
The State Plane Coordinate System of 2022 (SPCS2022) layers represent the multizone coordinate systems developed as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey (NGS) modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). NGS has undertaken the NSRS modernization effort to improve the accuracy and consistency of the national reference system, align it with international standards and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and account for Earth's dynamic crustal movement.
The Regional Zones constitute what the NGS refers to as the "Multizone Complete" layer, but local entities often refer to them as "Regional Zones." These 11 zones offer seamless, full coverage for the entire state of Utah, providing a practical balance between reduced linear distortion and multi-county coverage for surveying, mapping, and engineering applications.
The Low Distortion Zones constitute what the NGS refers to as the "Multizone Partial" layer, but local entities often refer to them as "Low Distortion Zones." These 79 zones provide partial coverage of the state and are designed to deliver lower linear distortion for high-precision surveying, mapping, and engineering applications in localized areas.

A closer look
This dataset provides GIS professionals, land surveyors, and civil engineers with boudnary and projection parameters for Utah's complete SPCS2022 zones. It allows users to identify appropriate SPCS2022 coordinate zones for regional and multi-county projects while aligning with modern National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) standards.
Each polygon represents the designated geographic extent of an individual SPCS2022 zone. Features contain attribute metadata defining zone codes, zone names, central meridians, scale factors, and official projection parameters defined by NOAA NGS.
These datasets were created by NOAA. UGRC imported NOAA's Shapefiles into a file geodatabase, projected them into UTM 12N (EPSG: 26912), and then imported them into an enterprise geodatabase. No other alterations were made to the data.
